(Where “this thing” == my 13 month old)
A few weeks ago I was living the dream. Tiny person was in bed by 7:30-7:45, tiny person was awake at 7:15-7:20 and took two naps a day totaling around 2.5 hours.
Now he wakes up between 6:40-6:50 and his two naps total about 1.75 hours and I can tell he isn’t ready to give up his morning nap in favor of one nap a day because by 10am he usually falls asleep within 5-10 minutes.
I don’t know what happened, but I want that 45 minutes to one hour back, and I want it back NOW!
I know, woe is me, my child sleeps ~11 hours in a row at night.. but in those extra minutes I could be (a) sleeping, (b) starting dinner (c) reading a book for about 15 minutes after having completed my baby-nap-time-to-do list. Now I’m lucky if I can finish my regular list of things to do before he wakes up, and I really miss those extra 30 minutes of sleep in the morning.
Now, I’ll admit when he wakes up before 7am (which he’s done every day this week thus leading me to assume it’s the new “normal” instead of just a fluke) I leave him in bed until 7. Even if I have to listen to him playing in his crib for 20 minutes before I get out of bed I refuse to get him out of bed before 7 because I keep hoping that he’ll eventually realize there’s no sense waking up until 7. Because I’m sure he can totally tell time.
I’ve also never looked forward to losing an hour like I am this year, because that gives me a chance to see if the issue is maybe somewhat self correcting in that when the time changes we’ll start putting him to bed earlier, and he’ll start getting up earlier and maybe eventually we’ll balance out to something like him going to bed at 8:15 instead of 7:45 and then getting up at 7:15 instead of 6:40.
And also it might help if my neighbor’s dogs would stop barking at nothing in the mornings. The house is a rental so there’s a light at the end of that tunnel, but twice this week we woke up at 6:40 because the dogs were barking their heads off, and while I could have gone back to sleep, Jack didn’t see any reason to and he was up for the day! (Last night we put blackout curtains in his room and the dogs did not bark this morning and he still woke up at 6:45. I had such high hopes.)
