Happy 4th of July!

I hope everyone had a good long weekend! I know that I especially enjoyed that even though Saturday completely felt like Sunday, it wasn’t! And I got to sleep in 3 mornings in a row. Although I’m not entirely sure that Friday morning counts because I did manage to sleep til 8:20 which is pretty normal, but I woke up in a panic because I had forgotten to start the BBQ the night before and I was worried it might not be ready for the cookout in the afternoon!

Fortunately it was ready in time. WHEW.

In addition to BBQ, I made cupcakes with pink and blue icing. I was going for red and blue but it took a LOT of icing to achieve the hot pink color and I figured there wasn’t enough food coloring in the world to turn it actually red. We also cooked out chicken and brats, my mom made potato salad and brought corn, that I completely forgot to cook so now we’ll be having corn every night this week, which is fine because it was delicious!

Nate also held a bourbon tasting. What that has to do with the 4th of July I don’t know, but it was entertaining. Meg slept through the tasting, but my parents both participated as well as some of our friends.

I tried a few different types, and let me tell you.. those first few? THEY BURRRNNNN! Seriously. My lips and throat burned afterward. I had to sit out a few before I could summon up the courage to taste any others, and while they did get moderately less painful they got nowhere near drinkable.

You need special, highly concentrated, professional grade food coloring to make primary colors like that, so don’t feel bad 🙂

  2. I admire your perseverance on the bourbon tasting. I saw your pictures on flickr… looks like you all had a blast! I have to say it cracks me up a little that its you and your friends partying with your parents, but it doesn’t surprise me at all knowing your parents even the little bit that I do.
